8. Malikarjun Kharge is the new Congress President.

* Malikarjun Kharge has been elected president of the country's oldest political party, the Congress. After 24 years, Kharge has made history by becoming the first non-Gandhi president. Mallikarjun Kharge received 7897 votes, while Shashi Tharoor received 1072 votes.

Mallikarjun Kharge Elected As The New Congress President Veteran Karnataka leader Mallikarjun Kharge defeated his rival Shashi Tharoor to become the first non-Gandhi Congress president in 24 years, and the grand old organization's first Scheduled Caste chief in four decades. Kharge received 7897 of the 9385 votes cast, while Tharoor received only 1072. According to sources, 416 votes were invalid.

He is the first non-Gandhi to lead the Congress in 24 years, following the unceremonious removal of Sitaram Kesri in 1988 by a Congress Working Committee resolution that invited Sonia Gandhi to become party leader. Sonia joined the Congress as a primary member only a year ago, at the AICC Kolkata plenary in 1997.

The promotion of Kharge is calculated. He is a tall SC leader who ascended from humble beginnings to enter politics in 1972. Furthermore, he is known in party circles as a Gandhi yes man and is not expected to upset the first family, having already stated that he would seek the advice of Gandhis and that "there was no shame in doing so." Kharge is also the only Congress leader to have served as leader of the opposition in a state assembly (Karnataka), as leader of the party in Lok Sabha, and as leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha.

In deference to the Congress' 'one person, one post' rule, the veteran resigned as RS leader of opposition after filing his papers for the party president's election at the Udaipur Chitan Shivir in May. This was the first election for Congress president in 22 years and the party's fifth major contest in its 137-year history. Sonia Gandhi defeated Jitendra Prasad in 2000, receiving 7448 votes to Prasad's 96.

Tharoor congratulated Kharge, saying that being Congress president was a "great honour and a huge responsibility," and wished him "all success in the task." "Our president is a party colleague and senior who brings plenty of leadership and experience to the table," he said in a tweet. "Under his direction, I am confident that we can all work together to take the party to new heights."

According to Neelanjan Sircar, a senior fellow at the Center for Policy Research, the change at the top is a significant step forward for the party. "This symbolic change of president is a very powerful moment for Congress," Sircar told Reuters. "Its willingness to change must be reflected in organisational change on the ground."
