3. Gujarat's Deesa Air Base is located near the Indo-Pak border.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the groundwork for the Indian Air Force's (IAF) new airbase at Deesa in Gujarat's Banaskantha district, describing it as an effective centre of India's security.

He claims that the Deesa air base, which is only 130 kilometres from the Indo-Pak border, will be able to better respond to any threat from the west.

Although the Vajpayee government gave the Indian Air Force (IAF) in-principle approval for the Deesa airbase in 2000, the project was put on hold by the UPA government for the next 14 years. Although the project was revived when Narendra Modi became Prime Minister, it was the 2017 massive floods in Banaskantha that really pushed it forward.

When Prime Minister Modi and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked the IAF to provide flood relief, the Air Headquarters, then led by Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa, found it difficult to provide a relief air bridge to the affected area due to bad weather and the lack of a nearby airfield because Deesa was still lying-in files. The airbase was approved by the government, along with the 1,000 crore funding, at the time of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Significance-

While PM Modi stated that the Deesa airbase will provide the IAF with faster offensive capability in this sector, the new airfield will also bridge a critical tactical gap between forward air bases in Gujarat at Naliya, Bhuj, and Phalodi.

The Deesa air base will act as a fire wall between enemy aircraft taking off from Mirpur Khas in Hyderabad and Pakistan's Shahbaz F-16 airbase in Jacobabad, with Gujarat's more than a trillion dollar industrial complex in and around Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, and Vadodara as a target to economically hit India in the worst-case scenario. Deesa's deep penetration strike aircraft will also make Pakistani cities like Hyderabad, Karachi, and Sukkur vulnerable.

Apart from providing support to any future land offensive, the airbase can also be used to retaliate against Pakistan in the event of a major terror strike in Gujarat or along the south-western sector.

More Information on Indian Air Force Stations-
