According to Singh, India has made the transition from a (defense) importer to an exporter in the last few years. Def Expo will accelerate this journey, he says. "India, which was once thought to be the world's largest (defense) importer, is now among the top 25 exporting countries," the defense minister said in his speech. According to him, over 13,000 companies will be present at Def Expo. "India achieved a record Rs 13,000 crore in defense items and technology exports in 2021-22, which is likely to rise to Rs 17,000 crore in 2022-23," Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar said. According to officials, 451 agreements related to the defense sector have been signed in the run-up to Def Expo, with a proposed investment of Rs 1.50 lakh crore. According to them, Gujarat-based companies have signed MoUs with an investment pledge of Rs 5,000 crore.

3. Shehan Karunatilaka, a Sri Lankan author, has won the Booker Prize 2022.

Shehan Karunatilaka, a Sri Lankan author, has won the Booker Prize 2022 for fiction for his work "The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida," about a journalist murdered amid sectarian strife in the country. The judges praised the film's "ambition of scope" and "hilarious audacity of narrative techniques." The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is Karunatilaka's second novel, following on from his debut, China man, which was published in 2011.
The novel was chosen because "it's a book that takes the reader on a roller coaster journey through life and death right to what the author describes as the dark heart of the world," according to Neil MacGregor, chair of the judges for this year's prize.

Karunatilaka, 47, is the second Sri Lankan to receive the award, following Michael Ondaatje's win for "The English Patient" in 1992. Aside from the £50,000 ($56,000) prize, winning the Booker can provide a significant boost in sales and public profile.

The Booker Prize-winning novel tells the story of the titular photographer, who wakes up dead in what appears to be a celestial visa office in 1990. Maali has seven moons to contact the people he loves the most and lead them to a hidden cache of photos of civil war atrocities that will rock Sri Lanka.
1990, Colombo. Maali Almeida, a war photographer, gambler, and closet queen, has died in an apparent celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking into the tranquil Beira lake, and he has no idea who murdered him. At a time when scores are settled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts who congregate can attest. But even in the afterlife, Maali's time is running out. He has seven moons to contact the man and woman he loves the most and lead them to a cache of photos that will rock Sri Lanka.
Shehan Karunatilaka returns with a mordantly funny, searing satire ten years after his prizewinning novel China man established him as one of Sri Lanka's foremost authors. The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a modern-day epic that demonstrates once again that the best fiction offers the ultimate truth.

Booker Prize contenders' shortlist:
This year's Booker Prize shortlist included British author Alan Garner's "Treacle Walker," Zimbabwean author No Violet Bulawayo's "Glory," Irish writer Claire Keegan's "Small Things Like These," and US author Percival Everett's "The Trees" and "Oh William
" by American author Elizabeth Strout.

7. The total balance in the PM Jan Dhan Accounts has surpassed Rs1.75 lakh crore.

The total balance in the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) basic bank accounts has surpassed Rs1.75 lakh crore. According to the most recent government data, the total balance stood at Rs1,75,225 crore as of October 5, 2022, with a total beneficiary population of 47 crore.

8 Year Completion: A Significant Milestone -

The National Mission for Financial Inclusion has successfully completed eight years of implementation. Since its inception, more than 46.25 crore people have benefited from PMJDY, totaling Rs. 1,73,954 crore. FM Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman stated that financial inclusion is a critical step toward inclusive growth that ensures the overall economic development of society's marginalised groups. PMJDY has become the cornerstone of the government's people-centered economic initiatives, according to MoS Finance Dr. Bhagwat Karad. PMJDY Accounts more than triple from 14.72 crore in March 2015 to 46.25 crore on 10-08-2022. Women hold 56% of Jan-Dhan accounts, while men hold 67% of Jan-Dhan accounts in rural and semi-urban areas. In June 2022, the government issued 31.94 crore RuPay cards to PMJDY accountholders. Approximately 5.4 crore PMJDY accountholders received direct benefit transfer (DBT) from the government under various schemes.

Scheme

Women beneficiaries own a larger portion of the scheme, with 26.16 crore accounts, the majority of which (31.42 crore accounts) are in rural and semi-urban areas. "PSBs (public sector banks) have made significant contributions." PSBs account for 1.35 lakh crore of the total 1.75 lakh crore balance, followed by Regional Rural Banks with 34,573 crore," said a senior State Bank of India official.

Overall Influence

According to bankers, the implementation of some benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) during the Covid-19 pandemic established PMJDY as the preferred channel to access government schemes in terms of direct benefit transfer, driving people to open accounts, particularly in rural areas.
However, the fear that Jan Dhan will be a white elephant for banks persists. The average account balance is around 3,000, and the average cost of maintaining these accounts for a bank is nearly the same. Banks benefit from PMJDY as their balances increase. As a result, the Centre must make the scheme more appealing or the rate of growth in the number of accounts will be slow," according to a senior executive with a public sector bank. He also mentioned the need to purge dormant or inactive accounts. According to government data, approximately 18% of total accounts are either dormant or inactive.

Its Year-on-Year Growth Over the Previous 5 Years:

Rs1,67,812 crore in April 2022

Rs1,46,084 crore in April 2021

Rs1,19,680 crore in April 2020

Rs97,665 crore in April 2019

Rs79,012 crore in April 2018
