History of the International Day for the Abolition of Poverty
The International Day for the Abolition of Poverty was established on October 17, 1987, to remember the victims of extreme poverty, violence, and hunger. Over a hundred thousand people gathered at Paris' Trocadéro. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed here.
They declared poverty a violation of human rights and emphasised the importance of working together to address this issue. With these convictions, a commemorative stone was unveiled. Replicas of this commemorative stone have been discovered all over the world, where people gather every October 17 to commemorate this day.
On December 22, 1992, the United Nations General Assembly established the 17th of October as the International Day for the Abolition of Poverty through Resolution 47/196.
