The United Nations observes World Habitat Day on the first Monday of October. World Habitat Day will be observed on October 3 this year. The day invites us to consider our towns and cities, as well as the fundamental right of all people to adequate shelter. It serves as a reminder that we have the ability to shape the future of the community in which we live.

Theme for World Habitat Day 2022

The theme for this year is "Mind the Gap." "Leave No One Behind and Place". The emphasis is on increasing inequalities and challenges in cities and human settlements. These are the issues that have been exacerbated by the UN's triple Cs: Coronavirus (COVID-19), Climate, and Crisis. These three Cs have hampered progress against poverty. The United Nations has declared that combating urban poverty and inequality is a "urgent global priority." They have called for local initiatives to support the Sustainable Development Goals.

History of World Habitat Day

Every year on the first Monday of October, the United Nations observes World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of our habitats and the fundamental right of all to adequate shelter. The Day also serves as a reminder to the world that we all have the ability and responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.

The United Nations established World Habitat Day on the first Monday of October each year in 1985. The idea is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, as well as everyone's fundamental right to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for human habitat's future. Nairobi was the host city for the first time in 1986. "Shelter is My Right" was the theme.
