Kazakhstan's president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, plans to rename the country's capital, Astana, after renaming it in honour of his predecessor three years ago. Kazakhstan's president has signed legislation limiting presidential terms and returning the Central Asian country's capital to its original name, the latest step in breaking with his predecessor's legacy. The bill also restored Astana as the capital's name.
In March 2019, the name was changed to Nur-Sultan in honour of outgoing President Nursultan Nazarbayev. On September 24, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed legislation limiting presidential terms to a single seven-year term, a day after parliament approved the measure.
Important points:
The state naming commission must now approve the decision, after which it will be sent to the government, which will outline a draught decree for Toqaev's review and signature.
Toqaev, who has been criticising his predecessor, has already stated that he supports the name change.
According to presidential spokesman Ruslan Zheldibai, the move will be included in a bill of constitutional amendments currently being prepared.
Members of the New Kazakhstan parliamentary group proposed changing the capital's current name to its former name on September 2.
