R Venkataramani: New Head legal officer of India
As of September 30, when KK Venugopal's tenure as Attorney General of India expires, senior attorney R Venkataramani will take over. After Mukul Rohatgi retracted his agreement to assume the position again, the Centre started looking for a new principal legal consultant and eventually settled on the renowned attorney Venkataramani.
For a three-year term, R Venkataramani, a seasoned Supreme Court lawyer, will serve as India's attorney general.
Important information R Venkataramani is a lawyer with 42 years of experience practising in India's Supreme Court. He registered with the Tamil Nadu Bar Council in 1977 and joined the Supreme Court chambers of Senior Advocate PP Rao in 1979.
In 2001, the International Commission of Jurists and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights jointly asked him to present at their workshop in Geneva. This workshop aimed to provide a report on the 1966 Optional Protocol to the International Covenants on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) for the Human Rights Commission. Senior Attorney Venkataramani also participated in ICESCR-related operations of the International Court of Justice in the Afro-Asian region. He joined the Law Committee in 2010 and returned in 2013 to serve another term. He will now succeed K. K. Venugopal as India's attorney general. Indian Attorney General
According to Article 76 of the Indian Constitution, the President of India appoints the Attorney-General of India. He is India's top law enforcement official. The Indian Attorney General must be qualified to serve as a judge on the Supreme Court. There is no specific tenure for Attorney-General and he holds the office during the pleasure of the President of India. The Constitution does not specify the grounds or procedure for his dismissal and he can be removed by the President at any time.
