India has moved up to position 40 in the World Intellectual Property Organization's Global Innovation Index. 41 spots are moved up significantly in just 7 years. India moved up from 81st place in 2015 to 40th place on the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2022. With the exception of infrastructure, where it performs below averagely for the upper-middle-income group, India's innovation performance is above average overall. India continues to lead in Central and Southern Asia and currently holds the 40th spot, up from its 46th place in 2021.

The United States came in second, followed by Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.
