India and Iran are discussing the development of the Chabahar Port.

During his visit to New Delhi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Ali Bagheri Kani, met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Dr. Kani, a close relative of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, handles Iran's nuclear negotiations and is regarded as a member of the Iranian state's ruling elite. "During the delegation level talks, the two sides reiterated their commitment to continue cooperation for the development of the Shahid Beheshti terminal of the Chabahar Port," the Ministry of External Affairs stated in a press release issued following the talks between the two delegations. When asked if India would resume purchases of Iranian oil, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs said there had been no updates. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra led the Indian delegation to the meeting. The MEA stated that the consultations covered the "entire gamut of bilateral relations, including political, economic, cultural, and consular aspects." "The two parties discussed regional and international issues, including Afghanistan." According to an MEA release, "Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Kani briefed the Foreign Secretary on issues related to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action."

During his visit, Dr. Kani also met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Dr. Kani, 55, is the son of prominent cleric Mohammed Baqer Bagheri Kani, who was a member of the Assembly of Experts, which was tasked in theory with electing and supervising Iran's Supreme Leader. However, in recent years, the Assembly of Experts has become less effective. Mesbah al-Hoda Bagheri Kani, Dr. Kani's brother, is married to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's daughter.
