Alappuzha's bridge project across Vembanad Lake is making steady progress.

The bridge, which will connect Perumbalam Island to the mainland in the Aroor Assembly, will make travel easier for the approximately 15,000 islanders who currently commute by boat.

The Aroor Assembly constituency is making good progress on the construction of a bridge over Vembanad Lake connecting Perumbalam Island to the mainland.

On November 7, 2022, officials announced that 40% of the work, including piling, pile caps, and all 31 pillars, had been completed. Girders are currently being installed. The 100-crore project, funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, is set to open in December 2023.

When finished, the bridge will be 1,110 metres long and 11 metres wide. The carriageway will be 7.5 metres wide. Footpaths on both sides will be 1.5 m wide. Three of the total 27 spans, each 35 m long, are navigation spans in the middle. The three middle spans will be built at a height of 55 metres.

In Arookutty village, the bridge connects Perumbalam and Vaduthala. Officials stated that approach roads totaling 550 m in length would be built on both ends. A total of 2.68 acres of land will be required for the project.

A lengthy wait:

The bridge's construction had been a long-pending demand. When completed, the bridge will make travel easier for the approximately 15,000 islanders who currently use boats to commute between their village and the mainland. It is part of a larger plan by the government to connect the Cherthala-Arookutty road with the Vaikom-Poothotta-Tripunithura State highway via Perumbalam island. It intends to build a bridge connecting Perumbalam Island and Vattavayal Island in the following phase. Between Vattavayal and Poothotta, a third bridge will be built.

The construction of all three bridges will make it easier to commute between the districts of Ernakulam, Alappuzha, and Kottayam.

MLA Daleema Jojo stated that the Perumbalam bridge construction would be completed on time. The Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society is in charge of the work.
