India commemorates the 118th birthday of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the country's second Prime Minister. Shastri, who succeeded Jawaharlal Nehru, was respected for his forthrightness and honesty, and he was awarded the Bharat Ratna after his death, making him the first posthumous laureate of this prestigious award. Shastri shares the same birthday (2 October) as Mahatma Gandhi, despite being born 35 years later in 1904. He is also known for coining the slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan."

Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on October 2, 1904, in Mughalsarai, to Sharada Prasad Srivastava, a clerk at the revenue office in Allahabad, and Ramadulari Devi.
Lal Bahadur Shastri attended Mughalsarai and Varanasi's East Central Railway Inter College. He received his diploma from the Kashi Vidyapeeth in 1926.
Shastri joined the non-cooperation movement to fight the British when he was 16 years old. His Prime Minister ship lasted only 19 months, but he has served the country for 30 years by being a part of India's independence struggle.
He was a life member of Lala Lajpat Rai's servants of the people's society (Lok Sevak Mandal). He began working for the upliftment of the lower classes there and later became President of that society.
Shastri joined the Indian independence movement in the 1920s and was imprisoned for a time by the British.
He took part in the salt satyagraha in the 1930s and was imprisoned for more than two years.
He was the organising secretary of the Parliamentary Board of UP in 1937 and was imprisoned again in 1942 when Mahatma Gandhi delivered the Quit India speech in Mumbai. His incarceration lasted until 1946, with an average sentence of nine years. He spent his time in prison reading books and studying the works of western philosophers, revolutionaries, and social reformers.
In 1966, he was also posthumously awarded India's highest civilian award.
He promoted the white and green revolutions in India, which increased milk production by assisting the Amul milk co-operative in Gujarat and establishing the National Dairy Development Board.
In 1965, his contribution to the green revolution increased food grain productivity in states such as Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.
In 1966, he was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna.
The death anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri:
Shastri died on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, just a day after the peace treaty to end the 1965 Indo-Pakistan War was signed.
The official cause of death was cardiac arrest, but the Shastri family claimed it was poisoned.
