On October 14, 2022, the world will observe International E-Waste Day.
Every year on October 14, International E-Waste Day is observed, providing an opportunity to reflect on the effects of e-waste and the actions required to improve e-product circularity.
2022 International E-Waste Day:
Every year on October 14, International E-Waste Day is observed, providing an opportunity to reflect on the effects of e-waste and the actions required to improve e-product circularity. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recycling (WEEE) Forum created International E-Waste Day in 2018 to raise public awareness of waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling and encourage consumers to recycle. International E-Waste Day will be celebrated for the fifth time in 2022.
This year's International E-Waste Day will focus on small electrical devices that we no longer use but keep in drawers and cupboards or frequently throw away in the general waste bin. This is why, in 2022, International E-Waste Day (#ewasteday) will focus on small e-waste items, with the slogan "Recycle it all, no matter how small!" #ewasteday will be held on October 14, 2022.
Concerning E-Waste:
According to the United Nations, in 2021, each person on the planet will generate 7.6 kg of e-waste, resulting in a massive 57.4 million tonnes being generated globally. Only 17.4% of this electronic waste, which contains a mix of hazardous substances and valuable materials, will be properly collected, treated, and recycled. Many initiatives are being launched to address this growing concern, but none of them will be fully effective unless consumers play an active role and are properly educated.
According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), e-waste is one of the world's largest and most complex waste streams. According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020, the world generated 53.6 Mt of e-waste in 2019, with only 9.3 Mt (17%) collected and recycled. E-waste contains valuable materials as well as hazardous toxins, making efficient material recovery and safe recycling of e-waste critical for both economic value and environmental and human health. The disparity between the amount of e-waste produced and the amount of e-waste properly recycled reflects the urgent need for all stakeholders, including youth, to address this issue.
