1.  The Pandemic Fund Is Officially Launched at the G20

The official launch of the Pandemic Fund will take place on the margins of the G20 Joint Finance and Health Ministers' Meeting in Bali, Indonesia, in the presence of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The Pandemic Fund, now with a new name and logo, will present the most recent progress made by the Governing Board since its establishment on September 8, 2022, to become operational - an important step toward strengthening global health architecture.

Based on the lessons learned from COVID-19, which revealed significant weaknesses and underinvestment in pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR), particularly in low- and middle-income countries, the Pandemic Fund aims to strengthen these countries' capacity to mitigate the risks of future global health threats. It will provide a dedicated source of long-term financing for PPR and address critical gaps at the national, regional, and global levels through investments and technical assistance. The Pandemic Fund is also expected to encourage countries to prioritise this agenda and step up their own efforts.

According to Dr. Chatib Basri, co-Chair of the Pandemic Fund Governing Board, this is the first time the international community has come together around a funding mechanism dedicated to investing in pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response in developing countries. "The Pandemic Fund plays a unique and critical role in making the world a safer place." PPR is a worldwide public good that benefits everyone. Every dollar we raise now to invest in PPR in low- and middle-income countries will save lives and money, resulting in a more resilient world for years to come."

The Pandemic Fund, which was created with the leadership of Indonesia and Italy during their respective G20 presidencies, has already received US$1.4 billion in seed funding from 24 donors. To establish the Pandemic Fund, the World Bank and WHO collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders, including partner countries, civil society organisations (CSOs), and potential implementing entities.

Under the leadership of its new Chair, Dr Michael Ryan, the Technical Advisory Panel (TAP) will assess and make recommendations to the Governing Board on the technical merits of funding proposals, ensuring links to the International Health Regulations (2005) and other internationally endorsed legal frameworks, consistent with a One Health approach, as part of the broader global PPR architecture.

2. The Pan-India Coastal Defence Exercise Sea Vigil-22 has begun.

The third edition of the 'Pan-India' Coastal Defence Exercise 'Sea Vigil-22' will take place from November 15 to 16, 2022.

This National Level Coastal Defence Exercise was conceived in 2018 to validate various measures implemented to improve maritime security since '26/11.' The concept of 'Sea Vigil,' which is a major subset of the Coastal Defence construct, is to activate the Coastal Security apparatus across India and assess the overarching Coastal Defence mechanism.

The Pan-India Coastal Defence Exercise Sea Vigil-22 has begun.

The exercise will be carried out along India's entire 7516 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone, involving all Coastal States and Union territories, as well as other maritime stakeholders such as fishing and coastal communities. The exercise is being carried out by the Indian Navy in collaboration with the Coast Guard and other ministries in charge of maritime activities. The exercise's scope and conceptual scope are unprecedented in terms of geographical scope, number of stakeholders involved, number of units participating, and objectives to be met. The drills lead up to the major Theatre Level Readiness Operational Exercise (TROPEX), which the Indian Navy holds every two years. Sea Vigil and TROPEX will work together to address the entire spectrum of Maritime Security issues. Ex Sea Vigil will include assets from the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Customs, and other maritime agencies.

5. Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2022 commemorates Birsa Munda's birth anniversary.

To honour tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda, November 15 is observed as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, or Tribal Pride Day.

On November 10, 2021, the Union Cabinet declared November 15 as 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas,' commemorating the revered leader's birth anniversary and honouring his contributions to India's freedom movement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated a museum to Birsa Munda, also known as Dharti Aaba, in Ranchi. The celebration of the Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas on Birsa Munda's birth anniversary, according to PM Modi, will be an opportunity to honour the glorious tribal culture and its contributions to national development.

Birsa Munda, who was born in 1875, led a rebellious movement against British colonial rule and conversion activities in areas of the Bengal Presidency that are now part of Jharkhand. His uprising in the Munda belt of Khunti, Tamar, Sarwada, and Bandgaon contributed to the revival of traditional tribal culture. Birsa Munda coined the phrase "Abua Raj Ete Jana, Maharani Raj Tundu Jana," which translates as "Let the queen's kingdom end, and our kingdom begin." Birsa Munda died in British custody at the Ranchi jail at the age of 25. Despite his short lifespan, Birsa Munda's contributions to tribal causes earned him the title of 'Bhagwan,' or Lord.

The museum is housed in Ranchi's Old Central Jail, where the tribal icon passed away. Munda's statue, standing 25 feet tall, has been installed at the site. Along with Birsa Munda, the museum features Budhu Bhagat, Sidhu-Kanhu, Gaya Munda, Jatra Bhagat, Poto H, Nilambar-Pitambar, Bhagirath Manjhi, Diwa-Kisun, Telanga Khadiya, and Ganga Narayan Singh. A 25-acre memorial park with a musical fountain, food court, children's park, infinity pool, garden, and other entertainment facilities is also available. The project was developed collaboratively by the Centre and the Jharkhand Government.
